KNOW BEFORE
YOU GO

WHERE DO I GO WHEN I HAVE A COURT DATE?

GENERAL TIPS:

  1. Arrive Early: Plan to arrive at the district court early to allow time for security screenings and finding the correct courtroom. Being punctual shows respect for the legal process and ensures you're present for any pre-trial discussions or instructions.

  2. Dress Appropriately: Dress in a manner that shows respect for the court. Business casual attire is generally appropriate, avoiding items such as shorts, hats, or clothing with offensive language or images. Your appearance can influence the court's perception of your credibility and seriousness.

  3. Be Prepared: If you're appearing as a litigant, plaintiff, defendant, or witness, make sure you're prepared with any necessary documents, evidence, or information relevant to your case. Review any instructions or communications from your lawyer if you have one, or familiarize yourself with court procedures if you're representing yourself.

  4. Follow Courtroom Etiquette: Inside the courtroom, maintain decorum by following the judge's instructions, addressing them as "Your Honor," and refraining from disruptive behavior, side conversations, or using electronic devices unless permitted. Stand when speaking to the judge or addressing the court.

  5. Respectful Conduct: Treat everyone in the courtroom with respect, including judges, court staff, lawyers, and other parties involved. Avoid making derogatory remarks or gestures, and refrain from interrupting others while they're speaking. Remember that the court is a formal setting where civility is paramount.

  6. Understand Courtroom Procedures: Familiarize yourself with basic courtroom procedures to understand what to expect during your visit. This might include how cases are called, how to address the judge, and the order of proceedings. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate to ask court staff for clarification.
